Erin Dyer, MD, MSc

In 2012, the generosity of Dr. Michael and Mrs. Amira Dan enabled the establishment of the new Michael and Amira Dan Fellowships in Neurosurgery at the University of Toronto. This program offers two 1-year fellowship opportunities each year. Now in the third year of the program, we are pleased to highlight the Dan Fellows for the 2014-15 academic year, Dr. Erin Dyer (Sunnybrook Hospital ) and Dr. Christian Dorfer (Hospital for Sick Children). Dr. Erin Dyer received her MSc degree from University of Guelph and her MD degree from the DeGroote School of Medicine at McMaster University. She completed her neurosurgical residency at the University of Western Ontario (2004-10), followed by two years of endovascular/cerebrovascular training as the Charles Drake Clinical Fellow at the University of Western Ontario. She then joined the Cleveland Clinic as a Physician Leader in the area of hemorrhagic care and most recently as an Associate Staff cerebrovascular neurosurgeon/ neurointerventionalist. Dr. Dyer chose to come to Toronto for Sunnybrook’s wide variety of cases, as well as the Division’s supportive training staff and teaching opportunities. Her focus is on vascular and endovascular neurosurgery and is eager to pursue additional training in spine surgery. 

Christian Dorfer, MD

Dr. Dorfer received his MD degree from the Medical University of Vienna in 2006, where he also completed his neurosurgical residency. Upon completion of his residency in 2013, he was recruited to the Medical University of Vienna as an Assistant Professor and Consultant for Neurosurgery. In 2012, Dr. Dorfer began PhD studies at the Medical University of Vienna, where his principal interests are pediatric neuro-oncology and epilepsy. He chose to come to Toronto due to the Hospital for Sick Children’s strong reputation and exceptional contributions to pediatric neurosurgery and focus on epilepsy and neurooncologic surgery. Upon completing his Dan Fellowship, he hopes to return to the pediatric neurosurgery service and epilepsy program at the Medical University of Vienna to aid in further enhancing both programs.

2013-2014

Menno Germans, MD

Dr. Germans received his MD from the Academic Medical Center (AMC) in Amsterdam, one of eight university medical centres in the Netherlands. During his neurosurgical residency training at the AMC, which he completed in 2012, he stayed several months at the University Medical Center in Utrecht for differentiation training in neurovascular surgery under the supervision of Professor Luca Regli. Dr. Germans will soon finish his PhD at the AMC in research on optimization of early clinical management of patients with subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH). Upon obtaining his neurosurgical license, Dr. Germans joined the staff at the University Hospital Zürich, one of the renowned teaching hospitals in Europe. Dr. Germans applied and was accepted to the Cerebrovascular Fellowship program at St. Michael’s Hospital for the 2013-14 academic year and is working with Division Head Dr. Loch Macdonald. He chose to come to Toronto because of the vast expertise and experience in the complete diversity of cerebrovascular pathology and the outstanding teaching skills. Moreover, participating in research programs and collaborating with Dr. Macdonald will support him in becoming an expert in the field of SAH. Upon completion of his Dan Fellowship, he intends to bring his clinical experience to one of the academic hospitals that are specialized in neurovascular surgery in Europe and combine it with continuous scientific research to improve the treatment of patients with cerebrovascular pathology in collaboration with Dr. Macdonald and the University of Toronto.

Amancio Guerrero Maldonado, MD

Dr. Maldonado earned his MD at the Universidad Autónoma de Guadalajara —School of Medicine, the oldest private medical school in Mexico. He completed his residency training in neurological surgery at the Centro Medico Nacional de Occidente in Guadalajara, which included clinical rotations at the Barrow Neurological Institute and the University of Miami. Dr. Maldonado also completed a brief fellowship in minimally invasive neurosurgery at Weill Cornell Medical College in New York. He obtained his specialty licence in neurosurgery from the Mexican Board of Neurological Surgeons in 2011. Dr. Maldonado applied and was accepted to the Cerebrovascular Fellowship program at Toronto Western Hospital for the 2013-14 academic year and is working with Division Head Dr. Michael Tymianski and Dr. Ivan Radovanovic. He chose to come to Toronto because of the clinical and surgical reputation of Dr. Tymianski and the group’s published work. Also influecing his decision to pursue training in Toronto were conversations he had with a past Toronto functional fellow from Spain had only the most positive things to say about the Toronto program. Upon completion of his Dan Fellowship, Dr. Maldonado plans to acquire further endovascular fellowship training in France. He ultimately intends on taking his training and experience back to Mexico where he plans to establish his practice and contribute to the overall development of the neurovascular field in Mexico.

2012-2013

Christian Juan Cantillano Malone, MD

Dr. Malone received his MD from the University of Antofagasta in Chile. He was the first graduate from his University to receive a full scholarship to the Pontificia Universidad Catolica de Chile, one of the biggest teaching hospitals in Chile where he entered the neurosurgical training program. Upon obtaining his specialty licence in neurosurgery he started working at the Pediatric General Hospital in Santiago de Chile serving a population of over l.5 million people. That same year he was awarded a pediatric clinical fellowship in neurosurgery at the National Institute of Neurosurgery Alfonso Asenjo. This is one of the biggest teaching hospitals in Chile and serves over 6,000 pediatric outpatient consults per year and 1,000 pediatric OR cases. Dr. Malone applied and was accepted into the Pediatric Neurosurgical Program at SickKids for the academic year 2012-2013. He chose SickKids because of its international reputation for excellence and his interest in the subspecialty of Epilepsy surgery. Dr. Malone’s expectations from this fellowship are to learn the nuances of pediatric neurosurgery and to develop his teaching skills for the next generation of neurosurgeons in Chile.

Leonardo Conrado

Dr. Conrado earned his medical degree from the Bahiana School of Medicine in Brazil. He completed his neurosurgical residency training last year in Porto Alegre, Brazil. During his time in residency, he began to read increasingly about the practice of medicine in Canada. Soon, he came to realize the many of the authors of the great works in neurosurgery were from the University of Toronto. When a close colleague returned from a positive fellowship experience in Toronto, Dr. Conrado was further motivated to pursue training in our city. Last year, he came to Toronto Western Hospital to complete a one-month observership, during which time he had the opportunity to visit the Division of Neurosurgery at Sunnybrook Hospital. He greatly admired the work being done across all of Division’s four hospitals, and was particularly impressed by the opportunity they afforded to gain exposure to all areas of neurosurgery. Furthermore, he was impressed by the investment in research made by our Division. He chose to apply for a fellowship experience at Sunnybrook Hospital because of the strong connection he made with their Division last year, and was accepted for the 2012-13 academic year. His goal is to enhance his clinical skills in our world class program and to return to Brazil to share his great experience in Toronto and help improve the programs there.
