In July 2012, the University of Toronto initiated a 0+5, direct entry Vascular Surgery Residency Training Program. This program allows for a focused training effort of the next generation of vascular surgeons. Vascular surgery residents at the University of Toronto rotate through 3 core academic sites, and 3 community sites. The core academic sites include Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre, St. Michael’s Hospital, and Toronto General Hospital. Our community sites include Trillium Hospital, Scarborough General Hospital, and Humber River Hospital. Residents are trained in the medical, open surgical, and endovascular treatment methods for the up-to-date and evidence based treatment for vascular disease.
Vascular surgery trainees have the opportunity to apply to the Surgeon Scientist Training Program and complete a Master’s Degree or PhD at the University of Toronto in an area of research that sparks their interest to apply the knowledge and skill learned to their future academic practice. The Vascular Surgery Residency Training Program has also recently transitioned to the Competency by Design Curriculum.
The Vascular Surgery Residency Training Program is inclusive, diverse, and focused on providing a rich experience that will more than adequately prepare trainees to be future leaders in vascular surgery.
