Rotation-Specific Objectives for Neurosurgical Residents on Plastic Surgery Services: PGY1 Rotation
As PGY1s, residents have the option of choosing a Plastic Surgery elective for 2 blocks.
MEDICAL EXPERT
By the end of the rotation the resident will be able to:
Perform a competent history and physical exam and interpret relevant clinical data for patients presenting with general plastic surgery conditions
Manage emergency and post op plastic surgery inpatients
Perform excision and closure of simple skin lesions
Take the role of first assist in the operating room
Draw relevant clinical anatomy, including the layers of the scalp and craniofacial anatomy
Describe relevant aspects of wound healing and management of complicated wounds
COMMUNICATOR
By the end of the rotation the resident will be able to:
Demonstrate effective communication within a plastic surgery service to maintain an efficient team
Create clear consultation letters, progress notes, and discharge summaries
Describe effective daily rounds
COLLABORATOR
By the end of the rotation the resident will be able to:
Describe the process of discharge planning for plastic surgery patients
List the roles of the other members of the plastic surgery team
List the mechanisms of patient care coordination with the other members of the trauma team
Define the appropriate documentation for plastic surgery outpatients and inpatients
Participate effectively and appropriately in an interprofessional healthcare team.
Collaborate with community agencies (as required) and other professionals.
LEADER
By the end of the rotation the resident will be able to:
Manage multiple tasks on time (i.e. follow up on reports, prioritize tasks appropriately)
Utilize health care resources safely, effectively
Utilize an electronic medical record effectively
Describe the mechanisms for effective practice management
Organize and complete morning team rounds
HEALTH ADVOCATE
By the end of the rotation the resident will be able to:
Demonstrate familiarity with important determinants of health affecting patients undergoing anesthesia (e.g. smoking, obesity, drug or alcohol dependence, cervical disc problems, family history anesthetic problems) and address preventative measures with patients
Discuss the barriers to patients in obtaining surgical reconstruction
SCHOLAR
By the end of the rotation the resident will be able to:
Recognize gaps in knowledge and develop strategies to correct these
Develop a strategy for self-directed learning and demonstrate the spirit of continuous improvement
PROFESSIONAL
During the rotation the resident will:
Recognize limitations and seek advice and consultation when needed
Discuss appropriate boundaries in work and learning situations
Demonstrate a commitment to excellence in clinical care and personal ethical conduct.
Maintain and complete a procedural case log that accurately reflects the resident’s surgical experience
