Dr. Monica Farcas receives Temerty Faculty of Medicine 2024 Award for Excellence in Postgraduate Medical Education

Please join me in warmly congratulating Monica Farcas, BEng, MEng, MD, FRCSC, on receiving the Temerty Faculty of Medicine 2024 Award for Excellence in Postgraduate Medical Education in the category of Teaching Performance, Mentorship and Advocacy.
The Awards for Excellence in Postgraduate Medical Education recognize outstanding contributions of faculty members who teach medical residents and clinical fellows, and serve as mentors and advocates to postgraduate medical trainees. Dr. Monica Farcas is an Assistant Professor and Surgeon-Investigator in the Department of Surgery, Division of Urology, at U of T. She is a surgeon at Unity Health - St. Michael’s, subspecializing in the areas of laparoscopic and robotic surgery, endourology, and renal transplantation. She received her Master’s degree in engineering at McGill University and obtained her MD and residency training in Urology at the University of Toronto. She then completed a two-year Endourological Society clinical fellowship at St. Michael’s Hospital.
In 2022, Dr. Farcas received the Emerging Leader Award as part of the Temerty Faculty of Medicine Dean’s Alumni Awards for her key mentorship role, especially for female residents, fellows and medical students. Dr. Farcas was the first female academic kidney transplant surgeon in Canada. She is also the founder of the Society of Canadian Women in Urology.
Dr. Farcas’ research interests are in surgical innovation and surgical device development as well as surgical simulation. She is described as “a talented robotic/transplant surgeon, problem-solver and innovator in her field”.
Dr. Farcas’ award will be acknowledged at the Temerty Faculty of Medicine’s Annual Education Achievement Celebration planned for May 15th, 2024.
