Michael Erlano Chua, MD (MASc cDSc DPBU DRCPSC FPUA FRCSC FPSPU FPhilGURS)

Division / Hospital Affiliation: Division of Urology, Department of Surgery, The Hospital for Sick Children

Location of Work: Philippines, St. Luke's Medical Center, Philippine Children's Medical Center

For the past three years, Dr. Michael Chua has been deeply involved in global surgery initiatives, with a particular focus on enhancing surgical education and practices in the Philippines. His commitment to this cause stems from a desire to bridge the gap in pediatric and adult reconstructive surgical care and education in underserved regions, leveraging both technology and direct engagement to make a tangible difference.

One of his standout projects involves the innovative use of remote augmented reality (AR) technology for telementoring, coupled with routine in-person visits to provide hands-on assistance and didactic sessions. This mixed-method approach allows for the extension of the global surgery reach and impact, offering real-time guidance and training to local surgeons without the constant need for physical presence. Through this initiative, he aims not only to enhance surgical skills locally for pediatric and adult reconstructive urology but also to foster a sustainable environment where advanced knowledge and skill expertise can continue to grow independently.

The efforts he made in the Philippines are a testament to the power of collaboration in advancing global surgical education and urologic care. By supporting these initiatives, donors contribute to a movement that empowers healthcare professionals worldwide, ensuring that quality surgical care is a reality, not a privilege, for all.
